Hi, I’m homesickboy. I design identities, websites, and things in print.

A small collection of identities, websites, printed things, and experiments. Here’s what I’ve been making.

A few starting points, before the screen.

From a first sketch to something that works.

I like finding the right form for an idea. Sometimes that’s a visual identity, sometimes a website, a magazine, or a small experiment that moves.

I usually start with a sketch and a question. The work here follows those questions through type, colour, images, and code. This is a place to share both the finished pieces and the thinking around them.

What I make

  • Identities & visual systems
  • Websites & interactions
  • Editorial & image making

How I work

  • Start with a clear question
  • Make a working version
  • Refine the small things

Working notes

A few things noticed along the way.

A letter has a voiceA small change in a letter can change the whole mood.

I like looking at type before I have a layout in mind. The curve of an a, the weight of a capital, the space between two letters. It is a useful reminder that an identity starts making an impression long before it says very much.

Colours need companyThe same blue feels different next to yellow or coral.

These colour tests are deliberately simple. By keeping the shapes still, I can pay attention to the relationship between colours. I use this kind of quick exercise before committing to a larger visual system.

Leave room for a pauseMovement is only half the story. Timing does the rest.

Small Weather began as a few still compositions. Moving between them made the pauses just as interesting as the transitions. The interactive version starts still, so you can choose when to set it in motion.
